Share Our Strength’s Global Mission to End Childhood Hunger
Share Our Strength was founded in response to an international crisis — the 1984 famine in Ethiopia — and while most of our work today takes place in the United States, our commitment to ending childhood hunger globally has remained a core part of our mission.
We work with trusted local partners and funders around the world to help children access the food they need to thrive. By sharing ideas, best practices and resources — including everything we’ve learned from our No Kid Hungry campaign in the U.S. — we are helping strengthen the movement to end childhood hunger worldwide.
Our most significant international effort to date is underway in India, where we are working closely with multiple NGO partners including Akshaya Patra, the world’s largest school meals provider. Every day, some of our implementation partners address morning hunger by providing morning nutrition or breakfast, while others serve hot, nutritious midday meals to millions of public-school children. Yet, millions more remain unreached. Together, we have set an ambitious goal: to help our partners feed an additional one million children over the next three to five years.
Besides Akshaya Patra, the network of local nonprofit partners we fund and collaborate with include Annamrita, Annapoorna, The Breakfast Revolution and Lok Biradari Prakalp — each contributing unique expertise in education, nutrition and logistics. These partners are integral to scaling up access to school meals, tailoring solutions to local needs and ensuring long-term impact. We are also introducing innovative fundraising and awareness strategies to support this work — drawing from the success of our culinary events in the U.S. We are piloting similar chef-led experiences in India to engage new supporters and raise critical funds for school feeding programs.
Our global approach is not about exporting solutions — it is about collaboration. We work to share our own strategies while listening to and learning from local leaders who understand what works in their communities. We believe that lasting change only happens when it is led by those closest to the challenges.
Looking ahead, we are actively exploring opportunities to expand our international work to other regions with significant unmet needs, including Kenya and Mexico. These countries face high levels of childhood food insecurity and stand to benefit from tailored, locally driven strategies informed by our global experience.
